Advice for Confetti & How to Get the BEST Photos
I have many parts of a wedding day which are my favourite to shoot, from the excitement of getting ready in the morning, to the dancing at night. One of my favourites has to be confetti! I just love the colourful chaos that it brings, the laughter and smiles, at the end of each wedding, the confetti photos are always some of my favourites. I thought I would put together some tips for you to ace your confetti walk!
Finding the perfect location.
Before you start planning confetti into the flow of your day, first find out if your venue/church allows confetti. Most places these days do, but its a good question to ask so you can understand what their requirements are (if any!). There is usually a popular spot at the venue where confetti takes place, but if you aren’t sure - talk to your photographer! They will be able to find a perfect spot, considering the backdrop and space to make sure your confetti walk is in the best space possible. Alternatively, you can have confetti thrown while walking down the aisle, this is a good option if rain is forecast, that way you and your guests can stay nice and dry but also get involved with the confetti.
What if the venue/church doesn’t allow confetti?
Then don’t stress! There are other ways you can enjoy a ‘confetti style’ walk. Bubbles are a perfect substitute, either walking back down the isle or creating a ‘bubble walk’ - again more bubbles the better!! If bubbles aren’t for you then sparklers are another option, this is great fun for everyone involved and can result in some stunning pictures of you both!!
What type of confetti is best?
There are so many different types of confetti to choose from, most coneftti these days are biodegradable, but always check that it is! A personal favourite has to be tissue paper confetti because it shows up so well in photographs, and you can buy them in so many different colours, from rainbows to greens, to whites. If you are going for tissue paper or petals, consider the size. Medium to large is best, anything too small and it won’t show up in the photos. When choosing your colour, think about the theme you have going on with your wedding, and find similar colours to match, or just go bright and colourful! The best tip I can give for buying confetti is to get LOADS of it! You don’t want to run out of confetti on the day, in this case, it’s better to have too much (if that’s possible) than not enough.
Preparation is Key.
This is important to make sure your day flows well, whatever confetti you choose, have it prepared either in little bags or have big baskets full so guests can grab a handful. A basket filled with confetti is the best to make sure everyone has a good amount - remember more is best! If your choosing to have baskets filled, then allocate someone in your bridal party to help hand out the confetti, so everyone is ready when its time. If you are have pre-prepared bags, placing them on the ceremony seat or at the entrance is a good way to make sure everyone is ready when the time comes.
How to throw Conefitti.
This might seem like a silly title, but trust me how your guests throw your confetti can really impact the way it looks and feels on the day. The best tip is to throw the confetti UP ! This way the confetti will flurry down over you, rather than it being launched in your face (but trust me there will always be an uncle or aunt who does this!) Your photographer will let your guests know once everyone is lined up, so don’t worry about making sure you tell everyone beforehand how to throw confetti! As for walking, this one is important - don’t walk too fast!! Take your time walking down, embracing everyone being there to celebrate the both of you, and keep your heads up! I know its a natural reaction to look down when something is being thrown at you, but from a photographers perspective, keeping your head lifted will guarantee your photographer capturing your smiley faces, resulting in perfect confetti photos to look back on!
How to Nail the Coneffti Walk.
As for walking, my top three tips are, to walk with confidence, keep your heads held high and don’t walk too fast!! Take your time walking, embrace the moment, and keeping your heads up will give the photographer a chance to capture your smiling faces! Walk with confidence - you just got married!! Own the moment and try to resist the urge to pull goofy faces (I know this can be hard when things are being thrown at you.) If it feels right, you can stop halfway through and share a kiss, do whatever feels right, it’s your day!
Most importantly - ENJOY IT ! This part of the day is over in a flash, so take your time and be present amongst the confetti chaos!
